Building a clothesline may seem a simple task and for some of us see it as unnecessary. But having this simple string in a backyard is very beneficial. The greatest gain from having a clothesline is that it reduces the energy consumption and cost. Electrical energy is non-renewable and to add to that the production of electricity has much drawback to the environment.

To reduce these effects start building a clothesline simple and inexpensive and more to that, drying clothes using the energy’s sun can kill bacteria present in clothes naturally.

Here are the simple steps to build a clothesline:

Things Needed. The following list enumerates all the items needed and they are readily available in almost all construction or hardware shops locally:

Building tools:

Leveling instrument- this can be an automatic level or a simple dumpy level whichever is available can do.

Measuring tape

Screwdriver

Post-hole digger- if not available a digging bar or a simple shovel can be used.

Materials to be used:

Bags of cement

Level boards- this will hold up the poles while they set.

Poles with cross-bars already attached – the number of poles to be needed will depend on the length and the desired amount of clothes to be placed at the same time when drying.

Eye bolts and/or hooks

Heavy-duty clothesline – this depends on the length of the desired clothesline but give allowance on the length to be purchased.

Steps:

Plan the location of the clothesline. Locate and direct it in an area where there is enough sunlight to dry off the clothes and make sure it’s out of the way and not blocking any pathways.

Decide the length and how many are the stretches of clothesline are needed. This may have already been done during the purchase of the materials but check again on the availability of space and need for clothesline.

A good rule of thumb is assign two poles and lines for a family of two, three poles for a family of four, and so forth.

But before drilling any holes in the backyard check for possible cable pipes or water lines along the decided location of the pole. To have assurance, better call the local utilities before drilling.

When all the previous steps are met, start by placing temporary marks on the ground were the poles will be drilled. Make sure that there are equal distances so as to make it uniform in appearance. Dig the hole to about two feet in depth. The hole should be wider on the top than the bottom so that it can move freely during a wind or frost.

Now it’s time to reinforce the hole and the pole together. First is wet the hole thoroughly, pour in the cement then place the pole and finally pack cement around it. The pole should be in level, support it up with a 2 x4 boards until the cement dries.

Let the cement dry for a day or two before placing the clothesline.

Then finally, place the clothesline in the pole see to it that it is set three or four inches above the height of an average person who will be frequently using it. Stretch the lines between the hooks on the crossbars.

And that ends the process of building a clothesline. Every household can manage to have a clothesline. It’s simple, inexpensive and most importantly through this simple clothesline it can go a long way in helping the environment.

People nowadays are bringing in natural and organic means into their lifestyle. Solar energy, organic food, biodegradable items, and organic fertilizers are just some ways which can help lessen the dependency in the use of chemicals and artificial resources. Another simple way to reduce the need for chemicals is by using natural and non-harmful ingredients in cleaning. White vinegar and baking soda are the most common and safe ingredients that can be readily used at home as cleaning agents.

VINEGAR AS A CLEANING AGENT:

To start off prepare a mixture of vinegar and water. Simply pour the white vinegar into the spray bottle until half full, then pour in the water all the way through the whole bottle to dilute the vinegar. This mixture can effectively clean off rough or hard surfaces like counter tops, sinks and vinyl floors. This mixture is not advisable for hard-wood floor, because it can give discoloration to the natural color of the wood. It also works well on glass surface like glass cook top stoves, glass tables, mirrors and windows because it does not leave any streaks. It can also be an added antibacterial agent when used because of the level of vinegar’s acidity. It is safe to use because of its non-toxicity, suitable when there are a lot of pets around. It’s also a non-pollutant ingredient which comes in an affordable price.

USES OF BAKING SODA AS A CLEANING AGENT:

Similar to vinegar, baking soda is non-toxic, inexpensive and readily available cleaning agent. It’s very safe to use as a multi-purpose cleaner at home.

Deodorant.

1.	Carpets. Carpets are one of the more difficult items to clean and is very prone to elements that can make it dirty and smelling unpleasant. To use baking soda to deodorize carpets, pour a small amount on to the carpet evenly. Then allow the baking soda to settle on the carpet. After 15-20 minutes, it can now be vacuumed to retrieve the powder. This process can be repeated when deemed necessary.

2.	Litter boxes. Indoor pets, especially cats’ litter boxes do give-off a very strong unpleasant smell. To overpower the smell pour gradual amounts of baking soda over the litter each time it is changed.

3.	Trash cans. Trash cans are another source for unpleasant smells especially when biodegradable items have piled up. To prevent any odor built up in the trash can, simply pour in baking soda at the bottom part of the trash can. Additional pouring can be done during the bag is changed.

4.	Garbage disposal. Similar to trash cans pour baking soda as much as ¼ cup in the bottom of the disposal. Make it settle for about 15-20 minutes to take effect. Rinse and drain it well in the sink.

5.	Freezer. Fill an open box or a container with baking soda and leave it inside the refrigerator. This will absorb the food odors that have accumulated inside the freezer. Change the baking soda for at least every 3 months to make it more effective. (30 days is recommended by Arm & Hammer)

Stain Removal. Stains from spilled food or chemicals in the bathroom or kitchen are quite hard to clean especially on hard surfaces. Create a cleaning detergent, mix baking soda paste of 2/3 baking soda to 1/3 water. Apply the mixture to the stains. After about 5-10 minutes, scrub the stain and rinse it thoroughly.

Even if there are no stains present, baking soda is useful to clean regular dirt on hard surfaces. Apply a damp cloth sprinkled with baking soda to wipe out dirt from counter tops and sinks.

Laundry detergent. Adding baking soda to regular laundry detergent or chlorine bleach can boost their cleaning effect. Mix ½ cup of baking soda to every load of laundry. Buy baking soda in bulk when planning to use baking soda as a main cleaning agent at home. Sam’s Club and Costo are available markets that offer large packages (12-14 pounds) of baking soda.

A steam mop is the modern way in cleaning. This cleaning device is more efficient and easier to maneuver compared to the traditional mop and bucket type of cleaning. For the usual water and bucket type of cleaning, the repeated use of the mop against the dirty floor and returning it into the water bucket only spreads dirt around. This can be dangerous, especially when kids usually play on the floor. With contrast to the steam mop it has a built-in self-containing bucket. To add to these mops come with triggers to release water when pulled.

Another advantage of steam mop is that there is no need to be on knees and strain one’s back when using it. Steam mops come with adjustable handles making it more convenient and faster to clean. There’s also the benefit of not ruining or placing harmful chemicals on the floor. This type of mop is equipped with a patented steam cleaning design which enables fast evaporation. So it can easily clean laminated wood, linoleum, tile, sealed flooring or any other type of floorings without damaging it. The steam mop is also able to heat the water in its tank killing all the bacteria present.

Compared to other mops that use disposable cleaning pads, the steam mop uses pads that are washable and reusable. Brands like Swiffer Wet Cloths and Swiffer Wet Jet are the usual mops purchased along with disposable pads. The regular purchasing of these pads adds up to much expense. While when using steam mop the expense will only go with the purchase of the product alone. A steam mop is an efficient, safe, convenient and inexpensive one-time investment for a cleaning device.

Antibacterial soaps are now commonly used in many households. There are also antibacterial detergents, shampoos, toothpastes, and other types of cleaning products being commercially marketed today. Though it has been introduced as the ability to eliminate bacteria, antibacterial soaps have been discovered by researchers and scientists that it actually only kills the weaker or less dangerous bacteria. It can even eliminate the good bacteria that help in fighting the more dangerous bacteria. Far worse “superbugs” or immunity building bad bacteria can develop causing more health treat.

Antibacterial soap is dangerous and further more it may disrupt the ability for children to develop immunity. There are certain bacteria that when exposed to can help develop the immune system. So having constant use of antibacterial soap will wipe out any type of common bacteria. A statement that antibacterial soaps should be avoided and that it is better to wash hands with regular soap and water which is far more effective and safer.
