Having a garden or lawn for plants to grow is a very rewarding endeavor. It does not only beautify the surrounding area of a house but it benefits nature as well. People who do gardening or growing plants outdoors can also improve their health and well-being.

There are several ways to grow plants outdoors. They can be grown either in containers or in raised beds. The types or kinds of plants that can be grown can be numerous so selecting the right type can be based on many aspects. For beginners who are still starting on growing plants or gardening, here are some basic tips to follow:

Hardiness zone. Hardiness zone also known as growing zone or climate zone should be considered in selecting which type of plants to grow. Make sure to select plants that can withstand extreme temperatures so it can survive more than one season.

2. Plant light needs. All plants have different light needs. They may need partial sunlight or plants that need shade so determine the plants’ lighting needs. Too much sun can damage shade plants while plants that need much sunlight placed under shades can stunt growth or lessen produce.

Soil. A very important aspect in having a good produce is through soil enrichment. Soil should be cultivated and enriched with fertilizers that will add nutrients for plants to grow into. Make sure to follow instructions on the labeling of the product to ensure effectiveness and to avoid any burning on the plants.

There are many types of fertilizers. Fertilizers can be either liquid or granular type and there are types of fertilizers for specific kinds of plants. Slow release, bloom boosting fertilizer after three months of application are types of fertilizers suitable for blooming plants and bushes. Multi-purpose fertilizers that have different lengths of time during application are well suited for trees and other plants.

Water. Another essential factor in growing plants is water. Too much of watering plants can actually kill plants same as for lack of water or moisture. To determine if the plants are getting the right amount of water, check the moisture of the soil near the roots of the plant. Dig at least 4” deep to see if moisture is present along the roots. The best time to water plants is during mornings and late afternoons. This will make the water to seep into the soil longer.

These are the basic elements to be considered when gardening. Growing outdoor plants may take much time and effort but the benefits can be overwhelming. So start off with knowing the fundamentals and definitely it will have a productive and rewarding outcome.

Tending a vegetable garden is a very rewarding endeavor. The potential in harvesting fresh and healthy produce makes all the hard work worthwhile. With these harvest, an organic and inexpensive meal will surely come its way.

Vegetable garden is indeed is a good source of a healthy and safe alternative from commercial or preserved food but the task ahead takes a lot of patience and work. To guide gardeners and vegetable growers a few simple steps are listed below on how to make a vegetable garden.

Rototill. The basics in rototilling soil require adding compost in the soil. Compost or store-bought garden soil can be added to enrich the soil. Never rototill when the soil is wet.

Landscaping fabric. Fit a landscaping fabric over the garden area by cutting the size and shape. A minimum of 3” of overlapping fabric is needed for the landscaping fabric. Then secure it by placing stakes or landscaping staples. Use a utility knife to cut slits in the fabric, and then plant the vegetable plants with a space in between 18-24 inches minimum. Remember to plant according to the direction of the sun and the probable size the plants will grow into to ensure that they can receive equal and adequate sunlight.

Take note: Make sure to have an enough time to do step 2 all in one day so as not to burn or cook the baby plants. Fabrics can accumulate heat and eventually burn the plants. If there is not enough time, do not proceed on the slitting of the fabric.

Cover the garden area. Wood mulch or cedar can be used to cover the garden area so it can keep the ground’s moisture longer and will require less water. Weeds will be prevented from growing because of the mulch placed. If there are any growing weeds it will be on the top of the fabric this will make its removal easier. With this, there won’t be a need to hoe the rows of the garden.

Watering. For most plants they need much sunlight as long as they receive adequate water. Once a day of watering these plants during the summer can be enough, unless there is a lot of rain. A healthy watering schedule would be during the early mornings and during the evening.

Fertilize with Miracle-Gro. This fertilizer can be applied once a month according as instructed in the package.

Harvesting. When all follows through a good harvest can be expected.

There are many advantages when using liquid fertilizer. One advantage is that it has an even coverage when applied, avoiding any burning of plants. Another advantage is that since liquid fertilizer is sprayed it is easier and quicker to apply.

To begin, determine which type of liquid fertilizer is appropriate to apply. There are two main types for liquid fertilizers namely the organic and synthetic. Organic liquid fertilizers are from animal and plant sources making it beneficial to the soil. The disadvantage would be since it comes from natural sources, it can give off a distinct odor. The odor though will fade away quickly. Synthetic liquid fertilizers meanwhile, work faster to make a garden or lawn look good in a short period of time compared to organic liquid fertilizers. The drawback though is that it does not further enrich the soil killing helpful organisms and may even burn roots because of the high concentration of salts. After choosing the type of liquid fertilizer to use, the next would be on applying the liquid fertilizer.

Below are some basic steps on how to use liquid fertilizer.

Before spraying liquid fertilizer make sure to dilute it first. High concentration of the liquid fertilizer might burn the plants. Make sure to read the instructions labeled on the product, if there is no detailed information on the amount to dilute, apply the liquid fertilizer in smaller amounts.

When spraying large areas, divide the area into sections. Attach a spray bottle to a gardening hose then walk on the imaginary grid on the area until it is fully covered. Keep track by marking the calendar for each application.

For new plants, apply fertilizer on the root systems this can be done by using a watering can. To keep the fertilizer from running off, place a basin to surround the spot for the new plant.

Some types and products of liquid fertilizers can be highly concentrated, so make sure to dilute them. Testing it in small amounts can be done. If brown spots appear then increase the amount in diluting.

Having regular consumption of organic meals is a great way to shed off harmful chemicals in the body. With today’s stressful living and with having more intakes of processed foods a nutritious meal of herbs mixed with fresh greens is a good way to start detoxifying. But having fresh herbs all the time can be sometimes hard and impossible especially with the changing climate or the limited backyard space available. So to create an available space and to have available greens all year round is to bring it in that is, by having an herb garden indoors.

When planting herbs indoors, planters will be primarily used to contain and secure the soil for the herb plants. One can choose either a long rectangular box planter or a planter for each plant. Between the two, a planter for each plant may be preferable. This is because it easier to separate plants that grow faster that may cover smaller plants preventing it from getting adequate sunlight.

Listed below are tips on how to grow an herb garden indoors:

The first step is to invest on good planters to be used. Choose planters that can be fit well and that can compliment on the particular style or theme of the kitchen. With kitchens that has limited space available purchase stackable planters or that can be hanged. There are a wide variety of shapes and sizes to choose from for stackable planters. It can have multiple spacers or rows that can hold on as much as nine plants or more depending on the model of the stackable planter. It is better to choose large or medium planters for herbs when planning to cut off herbs frequently for cooking. This will allow the herbs to have much more space to grow into. There are a lot different materials available in the market like terracotta, plastic or metal type planters.

For herbs, try purchasing them in a local nursery so as to guarantee its survival when planted on the indoor garden. But if opting on catalogue or online nurseries make sure to pick a variety of herbs that can grow and adapt to the local climate conditions.

After purchasing the needed items, it’s now time to plant the herbs. Fill in appropriate amounts of soil into the planter. Make sure the soil has enough nutrients for the herbs to grow and develop, compost or organic soil mixture is preferably used.

Place drip pans under each of these planters as not to let water run all over the counter when watering.

Almost all herbs need full sunlight. So locate the plants as much as possible to areas where they can get enough sunlight at least for several hours a day. The kitchen is the most convenient place to locate the plant herbs since it is near the cooking area. There will be easy access and maintenance of the herb plantings.

Don’t forget to water the plants at least twice a week, but this also depends on the local climate and weather. To check if there is a need for watering, feel the soil if there is still moisture left.

Now, having regular fresh and healthy organic meals is now possible, a good health investment indeed.

Natural pest control is a method that protects both the garden plants and that of the environment. To add to that, pesticides may yield unsafe produce of crops or flowers that may be dangerous to consume. That is why natural or organic pest control is the safest and inexpensive way to get rid-off pests in a garden or in a landscaped area.

Prevention is the best and foremost step in natural pest control. Putting-off insects from coming into the garden can be done on the following methods:

Remove possible habitats of harmful insects. Reduce insect habitat by cleaning and removing possible places where they may survive and breed. These may be debris, weeds, old leaves and mulch. Old mulch can be a breeding ground for harmful insects and their eggs or larvae can survive when this is not removed or cleaned.

Provide organic soil. To help plants get the proper nourishment, provide organic soil where they may thrive on. Organic fertilizer can be created by mulching or dressing it with compost and other natural fertilizers. This type of fertilizer will ensure stronger and healthier plants which will be far less vulnerable from insect attacks.

Dispose weak plants. When there are plants that seem to grow slower than the rest and that looks scrawny and weak quickly remove these plants from the garden. These weak plants may be already infected and that may very suitable for predatory insects to breed in.

Spray seaweed. Seaweeds are great compost activator. Nutrients like barium, calcium, iron, magnesium, sulfur and zinc contained in sprayed seaweed nurture plants in their development and growth. It also strengthens the immunity of plants from diseases and to add to this seaweeds can actually put-off slugs that are equally damaging.

Maintain dry foliage. Insects and fungus thrives on wet foliage which can damage plants. Keep the foliage dry by watering the plants early in the morning so it can gradually dry up during the day.

Thoroughly clean garden tools. To prevent any further contamination to other plants, disinfect garden tools that were used for infested plants. Plant pests can easily spread and invade healthy plants from infested garden tools.

Crop rotation. Rotating crops keeps away pests and helps plants to stay healthy. There are specific types of plants that insect pests target by having crop rotation can prevent them from spreading on the rest of the plants. To add to this crop rotation creates balance with the nutrients and helpful micro organisms in the soil thus keeping the plant healthy and immune to diseases.

Not all insects are harmful to plants. There are many insects that are beneficial in keeping away harmful insects. These insects may feed on pests and their larvae keeping away and reducing the number of harmful insects on gardens. Beneficial insects can be found naturally on garden areas and there are that can be purchased and selected from a catalog.

With all these helpful information on how to control and eliminate pests naturally, one can assure a productive yield and a safer and healthier environment.

Dead spots can appear to any yard. This can be caused by the urine of pets or other wild animals. Lawn diseases and spillage of chemicals like gasoline or fertilizer are also usual causes of dead spots. There are number of ways to remedy the lawn problem and one of them is through patch seeding.

The following are steps that can be done for patch seeding:

1. Nourish the dead spots by spreading ½” thick of quality potting or compost soil. It will allow seeds to get nutrients for their development and growth.

2. Choose a good quality grass seed that would be sprinkled over the dead spot. Pick a grass seed that is well-suited for the climate of the planting location. When choosing for the right variety look for quality seeds that may be expensive upfront but in the long run these types of seeds can withstand diseases and resist insect infestation. There are also other varieties that can withstand high traffic especially when pets like dogs or chickens are regularly playing in the lawn.

3. Cover the seeds evenly with potting soil of about ½” to 1” in thickness. This will let the grass seed grow, similar with any other type of seed.

4. Watering the newly planted seeds should be done either early morning or evening this will help lessen evaporation and maintain dampness of the soil. These new seeds need the moisture so it may germinate faster and properly. When these seeds grow and mature, the watering system can gradually set back to the usual.

Newly sprouted grass should not be mowed or even fertilized. Wait until it is fully grown and matured enough before doing any cutting or fertilizing. This may look unpleasing but in just a few weeks it will eventually grow lush and beautiful. To prevent from having yellow spots or dead spots to reoccurring, simply water the lawn every other day. The ammonia from urine of animals can be diluted by watering it frequently.

Deer Control

A deer is actually an insatiable eater of vegetables and flowers in fact a single deer can eat at an average of 5 pounds of greenery a day. If it decides that your garden is good spot to graze, it would return often. When this happens it’s like almost having a heard of deer feeding on your garden. The damage is overwhelming and to keep off these animals from coming to your garden is through applying non-toxic remedies.

Listed below are some of these safe solutions that can be done to your garden:

In a 1 liter spray bottle, mix a tablespoon of liquid dish soap and 1 ounce of hot sauce then add water. Shake the mixture well. This solution can be directly sprayed on the plants this will keep away the deer from grazing on them.

Mix ¼ cup of water with a whole beaten egg and place it into a pump spray bottle. Then spray the solution directly on plants. This mixture is effective even during light rains since it sticks well on plant leaves preventing it from washing off easily.

Use a pump spray bottle to contain a mixture of 1 cup of milk, 2 tablespoons cooking oil, 2 tablespoons liquid detergent, 2 gallons (8 liters) of water, and 2 whole eggs. Spray this solution directly to plants. This mixture is effective in applying on larger coverage.

With these non harmful solutions, it won’t be long for your garden to be safe from these grazing animals. When a deer have finally decided to shift its feeding grounds elsewhere the frequency of spraying these solutions in your garden can be decreased.

Rodent Control

Rodents are another animal that can cause possible damage to your garden. These animals are destructive which can feed on plants and tear up bulbs and crops into your garden. The best ways to get rid-off rodents in your garden is cut off or keep them away from their food source. Start with sealing compost bins, this bins are easy access of food for rodents. When you notice a trace of rodent activity in your area, look for their possible routes. On these routes place some rags or cotton balls that are soaked with peppermint. This will keep off rodents that are allergic from peppermint from using these routes. You can place these rags under an eve of your house or any other type of cover so it can be prevented from diluting when the rain comes. This strategy also works well with rabbits.

There are many benefits in creating a beautiful garden. Tending to one’s garden alone can relieve stress and thus improves one’s health in the process. There is also the financial benefit of planting vegetables and fruits where it lessens the need to buy costly goods in the market or at the grocery store. When one’s own vegetables and fruits are grown, there is the control of what type of fertilizer to be used. There is also the option of not to use fertilizer at all, thus producing a healthier organic meal. To add up to these desirable effects, a beautiful garden creates a natural habitat for small animals and plants, thus helping the environment. All in all, the labor of love given to gardening has such great benefits to one’s total well-being.

Investing for an organic garden does not have to be expensive and knowing the right secret in gardening can actually lead one’s creation into the town’s most beautiful garden. So what’s the secret?

The secret for this one-time-investment is simply nature itself. Nature is a free and dependable source of having that most beautiful garden that one always wants.

Nature provides abundant water supply. Place rain barrels around the house so it can capture enough water for the garden. Locate these barrels on areas where possible continuous flow of water is runs through. Along the end of a roof gutter for example can yield lots of water during the rainy season which can be used in weeks. Series of drainpipes and overflow valves can also be used to collect water.

Other than overflow valves, leaf screens and spouts can also be used. One can choose either the standard sizes or the customized sizes. Standard sizes of 55 or 75 gallons for plastic models are available which costs around 80 and 200 bucks each. But when creating a more classic look for the garden or landscape, high-end whiskey or wine barrels can be an option.

Rain water compared to groundwater or city wells don’t contain chemicals like fluoride that may harm or contaminate the plants. This is an ingenious way of having plenty of water and at the same ensuring a fresh and safe yield of vegetables and fruits.

Aside from these benefits, a rain barrel available at home can supply water for local fire services in case of the need for fire protection. Rain water barrels are also handy during emergencies and in the event of natural calamities. These barrels can supply water in areas where hurricanes and tornadoes might strike. This gives a peace of mind to people plus occasionally by having these rain barrels around, discounts on country or city taxes can also be given.

These rain barrels are great investments to a backyard garden. The benefits are numerous and even extend beyond its advantages in gardening.

Xeriscaping is a method used to reduce significant amounts of water consumption. Mowing and other maintenance procedures are also reduced through this method. Because this landscaping technique uses native plants, there will be no need for pesticides and fertilizers. A wide variety of beautiful and colorful xeriscape perennials other than yuccas and cacti can be produced even with the reduced supplemental irrigation. Purchasing at local nurseries rather than from online nurseries for these xeriscpae perennials is more advisable. There is assurance that these local plants are well suited to climate and local planting zone requirements.

Desert soil can evaporate quickly when it gets soaked up with any rain water. To avoid this, xeriscaping requires enriching the soil with organic or compost materials. To keep in moisture in the ground, mulching around plants can also be done. Other than these methods a shade provided by trees or large plants can also keep moisture on a xeriscaped lawn.

To ensure success in xeriscape landscaping, layout plants together with similar water requirements. Though xeriscaping’s main objective is to conserve water it is still necessary to water occasionally. The best way and irrigation tools to use are soaker hoses and drip lines. Remember that the types of plants chosen for xeriscaping are drought resistant so do not over-water. The best way to do this is to water deeply, but occasionally.

Xeriscaping may be costly at first, but in the long run a low maintenance and less watering can save a huge amount of money. Aside from this, an attractive landscape or garden can also be achieved. Added patios and walkways can also add to the visual appeal of a xerscaped landscape. Ask experts or professionals on advice and tips before doing any actual xerscaping.
