Recessed lighting for some may seem an inefficient and drafty type of lighting fixture, this may be true is some degree. But actually if it was located and installed properly recessed lighting when used has many advantages. Before recessed lighting was more accepted as an efficient type of artificial illumination, the older versions used much more energy. This is because they were originally designed for incandescent bulbs. To withstand a high-degree of heat emitted from an incandescent lamp, they are installed with an opening at the back or tiny spacers and holes were provided.

Today, newer versions of recessed lighting are now energy saving, efficient and safer to use. That is because recessed lighting can now house fluorescent bulbs, cutting the usage of energy. An added insulation and reflectivity makes the illumination brighter and more efficient. There won’t be a need for an opening at the back of these types of recessed lighting lessening the worry of having drafts into entering the home. When purchasing a recessed lighting, choose a fixture that comes with an airtight canister. This is very useful in sealing away drafts that may enter, especially on areas like the upper area of an unconditioned attic or when placing a recessed lighting in the basement.

If there is already insulation in these ceilings, use insulation contact-rated designs. These are airtight canisters that can withstand additional heat from the existing insulation.

The advantages of recessed lighting are many, both on its aesthetic and functional value. On the aesthetic value, recessed lighting can make a dramatic and relaxing effect when illuminating a room. This goes well in lighting bedrooms, in studios and at functional halls as well. Softer lighting can be easily achieved when using dimmers to control light and at the same time it can also save a lot of energy and costs. For functionality, recessed lighting is efficient as a task or target light. When lighting on displays especially on art pieces, this lighting fixture will illuminate the object with just the right intensity.

So start thinking of having a recessed lighting fixture. It’s practical, safe and can very much contribute in creating a dramatic and appealing atmosphere in any living space.

Potpourri is an easy way to keep a space smelling fresh and fragrant. Potpourri combines natural ingredients to create a pleasing scent, like flowers, cinnamon, cedar, and orange peel. These ingredients are gathered then left to dry for a couple of days then combined for the desired scent. Potpourri is usually packaged in cloth sachets or placed in decorative containers such as wooden pots or glasses.

Potpourri does not only provide fragrance but can also add as a decorative piece in living spaces. It’s also an inexpensive and charming gift idea.

The following are simple step on how to make a potpourri.

Things needed:

1 small to medium sauce pan

The peel of 1 to 2 oranges

1 teaspoon of cinnamon

1 teaspoon of nutmeg, or 2 cinnamon sticks

1 teaspoon allspice

1 teaspoon ground cloves, or 4 whole cloves

1 teaspoon vanilla extract

1 tablespoon cocoa powder (optional)

1 teaspoon ground or grated ginger, or one large piece of candied ginger

Steps:

Place the orange peels into the sauce pans.

Fill pan ¾ full with water.

Put all the ingredients. Vanilla and cocoa can also be added.

Then place the mixture into the stove. Let it simmer. If the water level lowers simply add more water. This mixture can be reheated and refilled up to a week.

Explore other spices or ingredients that may be added to the mixture.

Conserving energy, especially at home is a must. It’s actually simple and the benefits are beyond saving money. Energy sources such as water and especially that of electricity is a non-renewable source and the process of producing it pays a high price. Nature and as well as we human beings take a toll when electricity is produced. Pollution such as carbon dioxide is being released in the atmosphere when coals are burned during the production process adding to the already overwhelming toxic pollutants in the air.

So to do our part, take these simple steps to save energy.

Switch to low-impact bulbs. Changing from incandescent bulbs to low-impact bulbs are effective means to save energy and costs dramatically. One type of low-impact bulbs is the fluorescent which can equally illuminate as much as an incandescent bulb but consumes lesser energy and releases lesser heat. The longer life of fluorescents makes it more economical because it reduces the need for regular replacements.

Opt for programmable thermostats. By having programmable thermostats the adjustment and turning down the temperature will save energy and costs overtime.

Install a geo-thermal heating and cooling system. Geo-thermal also known as geoexchange, earth-coupled, and earth energy systems is an effective way to save energy. This can be installed during a new construction for a house. It uses the earth as a heat source. Geo-thermal system can also be combined with solar heating to boost greater energy efficiency. Since it uses natural moderate temperature from the ground it reduces the need for operational costs of heating and cooling.

Install low-flow showerheads. Installing low-flow showerheads is quite quick and easy and is available to local hardware stores costing only about 20-30 dollars. Some of the models of these low-flow showerheads come with shut-off valve so it can be closed while soaping then turned on again without changing the temperature.

Window sealing. This can dramatically cut energy costs. Sealing windows can be done by using shrinkable plastic or by caulking around the glass or any other draft-dodging methods. Replace windows to double-pane or double glazed windows if it can be afforded. This can save a lot of energy costs because during colder temperatures or during winter keeps in the heat from going seeping out.

Use light-blocking curtains. Change curtains into light-blocking types or block out curtains. This will reduce the heat coming inside through the windows and when coupled with an insulated panel will effectively keep drafts from entering. These are also effective in eliminating glare from the sun when watching TV or when taking a nap during the day.

Unplugging unused appliances. This is a simple task that can cut electric bills. Even though these appliances are turned off, a small amount of electricity still runs. When these are left for a significant amount of time the wasted electricity can accumulate.

Building a clothesline may seem a simple task and for some of us see it as unnecessary. But having this simple string in a backyard is very beneficial. The greatest gain from having a clothesline is that it reduces the energy consumption and cost. Electrical energy is non-renewable and to add to that the production of electricity has much drawback to the environment.

To reduce these effects start building a clothesline simple and inexpensive and more to that, drying clothes using the energy’s sun can kill bacteria present in clothes naturally.

Here are the simple steps to build a clothesline:

Things Needed. The following list enumerates all the items needed and they are readily available in almost all construction or hardware shops locally:

Building tools:

Leveling instrument- this can be an automatic level or a simple dumpy level whichever is available can do.

Measuring tape

Screwdriver

Post-hole digger- if not available a digging bar or a simple shovel can be used.

Materials to be used:

Bags of cement

Level boards- this will hold up the poles while they set.

Poles with cross-bars already attached – the number of poles to be needed will depend on the length and the desired amount of clothes to be placed at the same time when drying.

Eye bolts and/or hooks

Heavy-duty clothesline – this depends on the length of the desired clothesline but give allowance on the length to be purchased.

Steps:

Plan the location of the clothesline. Locate and direct it in an area where there is enough sunlight to dry off the clothes and make sure it’s out of the way and not blocking any pathways.

Decide the length and how many are the stretches of clothesline are needed. This may have already been done during the purchase of the materials but check again on the availability of space and need for clothesline.

A good rule of thumb is assign two poles and lines for a family of two, three poles for a family of four, and so forth.

But before drilling any holes in the backyard check for possible cable pipes or water lines along the decided location of the pole. To have assurance, better call the local utilities before drilling.

When all the previous steps are met, start by placing temporary marks on the ground were the poles will be drilled. Make sure that there are equal distances so as to make it uniform in appearance. Dig the hole to about two feet in depth. The hole should be wider on the top than the bottom so that it can move freely during a wind or frost.

Now it’s time to reinforce the hole and the pole together. First is wet the hole thoroughly, pour in the cement then place the pole and finally pack cement around it. The pole should be in level, support it up with a 2 x4 boards until the cement dries.

Let the cement dry for a day or two before placing the clothesline.

Then finally, place the clothesline in the pole see to it that it is set three or four inches above the height of an average person who will be frequently using it. Stretch the lines between the hooks on the crossbars.

And that ends the process of building a clothesline. Every household can manage to have a clothesline. It’s simple, inexpensive and most importantly through this simple clothesline it can go a long way in helping the environment.

Conserving electricity does not only cut energy costs but also reduces the threat in the environment. The harmful effects from electricity actually come from the process of producing it. One of the ways in producing electricity is through burning fossil fuels which include coal, natural gas and oil. When these are burned it releases huge amounts of carbon dioxide into the atmosphere that causes global warming and acid rain. To add to these disadvantages is that fossil fuels are non-renewable materials. It can be depleted in no time if there is continuous use. With all these reasons it is important and crucial for everyone to conserve electricity.

Listed below are ways to conserve electricity:

Lighting fixtures are almost used every day and by switching the lights off when not in need can have a great impact in conserving energy. Using dimmers is also another way to control the amount of light needed which can reduce wasted energy. Better yet use natural illumination to light up during the day, it doesn’t only conserve energy but is also healthier option for lighting.

Home appliances uses up the most energy. To reduce their consumption, switch off or reduce the use of these items as much as possible.

The refrigerator is one of the appliances that is constantly used for 24-7 and to lessen its energy consumption avoid leaving the it unnecessarily open. This is because the refrigerator will have to run the fan in order to cool back down.

For ovens, refrain from opening it unnecessarily. When it is open it would need to use more energy to go back to the original temperature desired.

To save energy from using dishwashers, run it only when it is completely full.

Washing machines’ dryer lint trap should be cleaned before drying clothes. For smaller loads, adjust the appropriate load size so as not to waste energy in washing.

Thermostats are one of the most energy consuming device at homes. Almost half of the energy costs are from thermostats and beside from that some thermostats emit greenhouse gases to the atmosphere which contributes to global warming.

When using the thermostat, set it in a comfortable level and see to it not the run the furnace exceedingly. Make sure that there are no blinds, curtains or shades blocking the vents.

Try opting for a programmable thermostat or digital programmable thermostat, in this way it can be set and maintained in the appropriate temperature even when away from home or during night time.

Unplugging appliances can save a lot of money. Even for simple appliances like the TV or the DVD player a lot of money can be saved when it is constantly unplugged when not in use. One device that can be used so as to unplug only one cord is the multiple outlet power strips or for a more specific models the smart power strip. This saves the trouble from users to each unplug all the cords of the appliances. Aside from the saved money there is of course the energy saving effects. This simple habit of unplugging can go a long way.

These are some easy and effective ways to conserve energy and cut off that energy bills at home. Conserving electricity is very important and the said tips on how to conserve it should be done regularly. With a constant habit of saving electricity this will definitely help in saving our environment.

There are many problems that can take place when a hot water heater is not properly maintained, like unheated water for showers, smelly water, strange noises, and rusty and foamy water. These are problems that cannot be ignored and for a lot of people who encounter these immediately hire a professional to check. When this happens a lot of money can be spent in paying for a plumber for an inspection or repair and when worse comes to worse replacement is needed. Installing a new hot water heater is costly and can also disrupt occupants’ usual activity in a household.

With knowing all of these troubles caused by an unmaintained hot water heater, the more that everyone should know on how to maintain a hot water heater. Maintenance for hot water heaters is not that complicated. It only takes an hour or so and once a year to increase the life of a hot water heater.

The following lists are tips on how to maintain a hot water heater. Usually with good use of the heater can properly operate as much as ten years, and can still be increased when proper maintenance is done.

Maintain 120 degrees temperature. 120 degrees Fahrenheit is the safest and the most economical temperature setting for a hot water heater. It’s a safe temperature setting especially for children. Beyond 125 degrees temperature may actually burn a child’s hand in a 3rd or 2nd degree. 120 degrees temperature can work well when washing with soap and other detergents which can thoroughly wash away germs. Lower the temperature gradually for every 5 degrees this can lower the heating bills up to 10%.

Check anode rod periodically. The anode rod is an important part of a water heater it keeps the tank from corroding. Anode rods are attached to the top of the water heater commonly with a ¾ inch hex head screw. Replace an anode rod when there are signs of corrosion this will be less expensive and can avoid any further corrosion of the water heater. See to it to purchase the right kind of metal for the steel wire frame that is compatible with the water heater, this maybe aluminum, magnesium or zinc metal frames.

Regularly check for leaks. Usually leaks are caused by pressure release valves. These valves are supposed to keep pressure build-up inside the water heater. But when a valve is damaged it will continuously begin leaking. It is best to replace the leaking release valve immediately to put the system back in good working order.

Flush the tank. Sediments can build-up overtime inside a tank. To help eliminate these deposits, drain the water heater. Begin the draining process by first turning down the temperature to let the water in the tank cool off by a couple of hours. Then turn off the cold water supply and by attaching on end of a hose to the bottom drain valve, direct it outside the house. To release air into the tank, open one of the house’s hot water faucets then open the water tank’s drain valve. When everything is drained off from the tank, turn the cold water supply valve on and off for a few times. At first it may appear dark brown or gray but after awhile the water will eventually clear up. Then disconnect the hose and close the valve when the water has cleared. Before refilling, make sure that the faucets have been turned off and that the thermostat is turned back up.

With knowing all these simple tips in maintaining one’s hot water heater, there won’t be a need to call the plumber. It can save a lot of trouble and expense. But if something really goes out of hand it might be as well wiser to ask help from the experts. This can actually be an opportunity to watch and learn on how the system is handled. Then when one is already familiar on the process, he or she can now operate on the hot water heater on his or her own.
