Wooden floors are attractive and appealing but due to its nature, dents can occur overtime. A damage that may occur is warping. It usually happens when wood was subjected to wetness or moisture, the wood then dries unevenly making it shrink or deviate from its flatness. Because of this deformity, furniture can be difficult to position and to add to that becomes a risk for accidents like tripping on the uneven surface.

When warping occurs this may be a sign of a more serious problem. Water leakage or problems in plumbing may be causes of the warping of wood flooring and should be addressed immediately as to not make the problem worse.

How to fix a warped wood floor? There are procedures that can be done by a non-professional to save cost and the trouble of having to consult an expert. This applies to minor or small forms of warping. The first thing to remember in order to avoid any warping or further warping is by drying off the wood flooring. Use a rag to simply wipe off the water that might seep in through the wood.

For small warps which only affects on board, try placing on top a very heavy item such as a piece of furniture or cinderblock. Leave it for a few weeks to make warp flatten out, if the warping is not too extensive it may straighten the warp. When the warp affects a few boards and it seems that it has not gotten worse, it can be replaced. Detach the wooden boards carefully and replace them with wood that has the same type and size. To match the old wooden flooring, tint or stain the brand new wooden board.

Call a professional when the warping can’t be handled or if warping has reoccurred even when the preliminary steps have been taken. Select a reputable contractor to do job, research first on their experiences and credentials.

Windows are important parts of a house. It protects occupants from extreme weather and at the same time allows natural illumination and ventilation to come in. Though there are many known types of windows that are sturdy and can withstand much tampering, a strong thunderstorm or hurricane can still break or shatter windows. If this happens, there will be a need of immediate fixing of the broken window as not to worsen its condition and endanger occupants on the exposed broken glass.

As soon as the weather allows, immediate mending of the broken window should be done. To prevent injury use heavy-duty gloves to pull out the remaining glass from the frame and pick up any pieces that might have been scattered along the area. By using a small knife and a heat gun, remove the remaining putty which was holding the broken window. The heat gun will then soften the putty for easier removal. For double or triple-pane windows, it would be best to contact a contractor to do the job.

When all the debris and glass have been cleared, measure the window frame to get the dimensions for the new window. If the new glass has arrived, prepare a thin layer of putty in the “bed” of the frame, where the glass will be inserted or pressed down. Insert the glass into the putty and to hold the glass into place, make new glazier’s points at regular intervals. If the placement of the window is intact and set, work it into a flat line along the sides of the glass by pressing a thick layer of putty. Do this procedure on the other side of the window as well. Then leave the putty to dry.

For the final touch, paint the newly installed window putty so it may blend with the other existing windows.

Home remodeling can be a thrilling task for homeowners. Exciting as it can be, it can also be a daunting task. When decisions are overlooked and rushed, the overall project of remodeling a home can be an unsatisfying one. To enjoy a successful remodeled home is to plan carefully and to consider the needed aspects of the project.

Listed below are some considerations to be taken note of.

Budget. The overall cost of the remodeling process is one of the most important to consider since it will determine the extent on how much can be remodeled, the materials to be used, and the time frame allowed for workers to work on the project. An estimate can be done to predetermine on how much the home remodeling may cost. It can be more convenient and accurate to hire a professional to do the estimate.

Building codes, zoning, and other legalities. Rules and guidelines should be followed all throughout the remodeling process. Make sure to have a permit before remodeling, this may add up to the cost of the overall construction and can eventually change some of the already laid plan of the remodeling. A consultation from an expert on these matters is the best thing to do as to avoid further complication or problems along the way.

Availability of materials, tools and equipment. When planning make sure to specify materials that are available and that tools and equipment provided can readily used.

Time-frame. Another important aspect to consider is on the available time at hand. The remodeling of a home may take some considerable amount of time depending on the extent of the project. Make sure to have a place for the occupants to move in and determine on how they are willing to move out and how much is the budget for the temporary housing while the renovation takes place.

Contractor’s coverage. Contractors may do everything in the remodeling process, from its start to finish but know if they have included in their services the disposal or cleaning out the left debris. Usually they may include it in their services but a fee may be added for this specific task.

Home remodeling may be a daunting task but by following and considering the mentioned aspects can make it easier and enjoyable. When everything falls into place it will definitely come out as a successful and rewarding undertaking.

Home remodeling can be easy to handle — if you do your homework beforehand and make certain to figure in more money than you will need. The goal is to get your remodel done and have money left over when it’s all finished! With some foresight and careful planning, you can make it happen.

Conserving energy, especially at home is a must. It’s actually simple and the benefits are beyond saving money. Energy sources such as water and especially that of electricity is a non-renewable source and the process of producing it pays a high price. Nature and as well as we human beings take a toll when electricity is produced. Pollution such as carbon dioxide is being released in the atmosphere when coals are burned during the production process adding to the already overwhelming toxic pollutants in the air.

So to do our part, take these simple steps to save energy.

Switch to low-impact bulbs. Changing from incandescent bulbs to low-impact bulbs are effective means to save energy and costs dramatically. One type of low-impact bulbs is the fluorescent which can equally illuminate as much as an incandescent bulb but consumes lesser energy and releases lesser heat. The longer life of fluorescents makes it more economical because it reduces the need for regular replacements.

Opt for programmable thermostats. By having programmable thermostats the adjustment and turning down the temperature will save energy and costs overtime.

Install a geo-thermal heating and cooling system. Geo-thermal also known as geoexchange, earth-coupled, and earth energy systems is an effective way to save energy. This can be installed during a new construction for a house. It uses the earth as a heat source. Geo-thermal system can also be combined with solar heating to boost greater energy efficiency. Since it uses natural moderate temperature from the ground it reduces the need for operational costs of heating and cooling.

Install low-flow showerheads. Installing low-flow showerheads is quite quick and easy and is available to local hardware stores costing only about 20-30 dollars. Some of the models of these low-flow showerheads come with shut-off valve so it can be closed while soaping then turned on again without changing the temperature.

Window sealing. This can dramatically cut energy costs. Sealing windows can be done by using shrinkable plastic or by caulking around the glass or any other draft-dodging methods. Replace windows to double-pane or double glazed windows if it can be afforded. This can save a lot of energy costs because during colder temperatures or during winter keeps in the heat from going seeping out.

Use light-blocking curtains. Change curtains into light-blocking types or block out curtains. This will reduce the heat coming inside through the windows and when coupled with an insulated panel will effectively keep drafts from entering. These are also effective in eliminating glare from the sun when watching TV or when taking a nap during the day.

Unplugging unused appliances. This is a simple task that can cut electric bills. Even though these appliances are turned off, a small amount of electricity still runs. When these are left for a significant amount of time the wasted electricity can accumulate.

Home remodeling and maintenance are important tasks that should be done to ensure safety. Aside from shielding away from elements that may harm or endanger a home’s occupants or the structure itself, remodeling and maintenance can also add curb appeal. The overall appearance of a home is also essential. This includes a makeover on the external and internal areas of a house. One of the most important remodeling or maintenance for the external area is the siding of a house. Sidings can make an immediate impression to the whole house so regular checking on its functionality and appearance should be done. But how will one know if there is a need for a new siding for a house?

Listed below are basic indicators when a home needs a new siding:

Check if the sidings are warped and faded, most importantly on parts that get much sunlight.

Check under the seams for dampness or moisture. This may also result to softening of the material, check if there is bowing of the sidings.

Check for signs of rotting or pieces of sidings are falling off.

The need for frequent scraping and painting of sidings.

The house is located in a drafty or windy area and experiences extreme weather.

If even one of these indicators is present in the inspection, it is best to have a new siding. These will eliminate any further deterioration of the sidings.

There are two options on how to have new sidings, either hire a professional to do the work or one can install the sidings by himself. The former might be a better option because it can save time and a safer and surer installation of the sidings. When choosing a professional, make sure to background check that these are licensed and reputable experts. Better to have several professionals to choose from in order to compare their service and price as well.

Either the installation will be done by a professional or by the owner a careful choosing of the right material for the new siding should be done. Consider the cost, maintenance, life expectancy and appearance before choosing the type of siding to be installed. There are several types of materials to be used in sidings some are vinyl, hardwood, solid board, fiber cement, cedar and log sidings. Vinyl sidings are a popular choice since it does not require any painting and can withstand harsh elements making it more durable and longer to use. Wooden sidings meanwhile can give a classic look but needs high maintenance. Engineered siding materials may be the best type for sidings since it has longer life expectancy and low in maintenance.

Minor home repairs is like a first aid to an accident, when it is not immediately attended it can get worse. So having a minor home repair is important in preventing any further damage plus it saves money in the long run. There’s no need to be an expert in carpentry or plumbing all it takes is patience and a few basic knowledge and skills in handling minor home repairs.

To help out, here are some practical and effective ways to do when repairing some minor problems at home:

Roofs. Roofs are one of the most important parts of the house. A damaged roof can lead to leakage and further denting of the wood sheath beneath. So check the roof periodically especially after a spring storm came through. Even if no leaks or it seems that there are no serious damage replacing a worn out shingle is needed. A routine checkup and replacement of shingles will save thousands of dollars and will save the trouble in having a full-scale home repair.

Deteriorating wood. Wood is a material commonly used in many homes. Though relatively durable, wood has the tendency to rot because of external elements like termites and water exposure. This is dangerous if the wood material is used as a post or a part of a staircase. Investigate on the cause of the problem. Reinforce the wood by using wood putty or filler or simply paint the area. If the damage is extensive it is better to consult a contractor before it gets extensive.

Caulking.

Caulking is important because it prevents any leakage from plumbing fixtures, pipes and faucets. It is also useful in protecting wall cavities where insects or other elements may come through. Through time the caulking applied to these areas will eventually deteriorate, a needed of reapplication should be done immediately.

Replacing old caulking is quite simple. The first thing to do is remove the old caulking by using a knife or scraper, make sure the area is dry. Then apply the new caulking by the use of a caulking gun. Make sure to position the caulking gun by 45 degree angle to ensure the caulk is applied deep enough and as much as possible avoid stopping or starting when applying. After the caulk have been applied, compress and remove any excess caulk. Leave it to dry.

These are minor home repairs but can simple as it maybe, should be addressed immediately so as to avoid any further problems. This can save a lot of money and much trouble in the long run.

Carpets can make a rooms look comfortable and appealing but they are prone from much tampering and damage. Flying ember, cigarette burns, spilled wine, and not to mention the unsightly mess pets leave in a carpet. These damages are not unavoidable and hiding them or even ignoring them can make it worse and unattractive for a flooring. There is available repairing or patching kits that can solve that damaged carpet.

Patch kits comes with a cutter and an adhesive paper disc. Using patch kits are quite easy. To start off, there will be a need to have an extra carpet to replace the damaged area. If extra carpet is unavailable get a part of the carpet flooring that is unseen and cannot be unveiled. Like under a radiator, a corner of a closet or underneath a shelf.

Begin the replacement process by making the fibers stand up. This can be done by rubbing the surface of the damaged carpet, then press the cutting too over it. Push aside the carpet until the backing is exposed by making several quick turns using the cutting tool. Then place the cutter blades on the tool. To cut the circle, line it up with the cutter then turn it in a clockwise motion.

Use the same method when removing the patch. Then slide the adhesive discs under the hole made. These discs should be larger than the circle so it can be glued on the back of the hole. When this is done run a small seam along the edge of the cut area of the carpet be careful not to have glue in the carpet itself. Firmly press the area then rub over it to make sure it has the same direction where the fibers lay. There’s at least 15 minutes before the patch dries up, this will give time for any readjustment needed.

When the patch has dried, blend in the fibers by hand or use a star roller or any other small rolling device. The replaced carpet should look as part of the whole carpet and not look as a patch at all.

When it comes to maintenance and keeping the house in shape, plumbing is one of the more complex and costly projects every homeowners experiences. But not all plumbing issues should be seen as complicated, there are problems in plumbing which homeowners can do even without the aid from experts.

Listed below are some signs of problems in the plumbing system with their easy solutions:

1.	Constant running toilets. Acquire a toilet repair kit. This can be readily purchased in many hardware and discounts stores costing ten dollars. A flapper valve, chain and other parts needed for fixing the toilet is provided by the kit. The loose flapper or a chain that is too long are usual causes for constant running toilets. To check the toilet, open the back part and for several times flush the toilet. Observe the parts when they move to spot if there is a problem among the parts. This will then determine which of the tools from the repair kit to use. An instruction manual is provided in the repair kit to be followed.

2.	Dripping faucet. Constant dripping of faucets are probably the most common problems for homeowners. With this problem, there won’t be a need for a major repair just simply takes apart the aerator and o-rings that are found in the tip of the facet. When cracks or any other damage is observed in the rings or aerators replace them with new ones. Aerators and rings costs only a few dollars.

3.	Blocked sink drain. Most problems of blocked sink drain is caused by dirt or other solid particles accumulated in the P-trap. Unscrew the P-trap to expose the inner part, then clean the area thoroughly. Make sure to place a bucked underneath just in case liquid or other solids might drip out. After cleaning simply reattach the parts of the P-trap and screw it tightly. When the sink is still blocked it might be best to call in the experts to solve the problem.

These are just minor problems that may occur in a plumbing system but are very common in many households. If any of these signs occurred, it should be immediately addressed by the homeowner as not to worsen or complicate the problem. Contact professionals at once if the problem cannot be handled or the problem worsens.

Painting a wall is very important it makes a bare wall look extraordinary when the right process and color is applied. But wall paint can get damaged or worn-off through time and many of us find ourselves the daunting task of repainting a wall. There will be some who are otherwise excited by this project and goes ahead and repaint the wall without removing the existing paint, which is not a good idea. Cracks and peeling will occur and eventually will add up with more work in hand. Listed below are some easy and practical steps to know on how to strip off old existing paint.

First, determine the type of the existing paint. During the 70’s lead paint were used in many homes so make sure that the paint does not contain lead. When lead paint is scraped, the lead particles can spread into the air. If this is breathed in, it can cause serious health problems. To confirm if there is lead in the paint, better consult the local health department in order for a test can be made.

If found that the paint is indeed lead paint, there will be a need to know the local guidelines to be followed. The options are either hire or not hire a professional to do the stripping. But if the later have been chosen, there will be a need for a protective gear.

But in the case that it’s not lead paint, there are several techniques to use:

Heat stripping. This method requires a heat gun, scraper, safety gloves and fire extinguisher. Hold the heat gun close to the wall, this will soften the paint. Use the scraper to remove the softened paint, see to it to scrape at an angle in which it won’t damage the wall. When this process is finished, sand the remaining frayed areas. If ever a fire occurs, the fire extinguisher should be come in handy.

Chemical removal. In this method safety precautions should be observed. Use safety equipment like safety goggles and gloves. Always read instructions and safety measures stated of the chemical to be used before applying. To start, apply the chemical to the wall then allow it to react with the paint. When the chemical has finally softened the paint, use a scraper to remove the paint then sand frayed areas to remove the remaining paint.

Hire a professional. This can also be a practical choice when it comes to stripping off old paint. Consider the cost of the tools and time invested when done without a professional. But if there are already available tools and one thinks he or she can handle it well, then proceed with the previous methods.

Ceramic tile is a good choice for flooring. It is durable, beautiful and easy to maintain. Compared to other types of flooring, ceramic tiles are less complicated to clean. With just regular mopping and sweeping these type of tiles will stay clean most of the time. The more serious problems when it comes to maintaining ceramic tiles is the stains and debris that can accumulate in the crevices.

Before doing any cleaning first determine the type of ceramic tile. There are two general types of ceramic tiles, the unglazed and glazed in which each needs different approach in cleaning.

Unglazed. This type of ceramic tile needs more maintenance than glazed tiles but are regularly used for flooring since it is more slip resistant than the glazed flooring. To clean unglazed ceramic tiles it will need regular damp mopping and sweeping. Since unglazed ceramic tile has a rougher surface, scrubbing should also be done to remove accumulated dirt on the surface and on the crevices as well. Simple water and soap can be used in cleaning so avoid abrasive chemicals because it may damage the texture of the tile. Use a stiff brush so it won’t damage the surface.

Glazed. For glazed ceramic tiles the same regular damp mopping and sweeping can be done as routine for maintenance.

Grout cleaning. Crevices along ceramic tiles can be more challenging to clean. Since dirt and debris can accumulate and stick to these areas. Grouts are usually white in color but they can occasionally come in different colors. To remove dirt or stains, use toothbrush or similar smaller brush to scrub it thoroughly by using regular detergent to soften the hardened dirt. Baking soda and vinegar can be added to the cleaning solution. Remember not to use bleach on colored grouts to avoid staining or discoloration.

When simple water and soap can’t clean the grout use commercial tile and grout cleaner. Spray the solution on the grout and let it stay for a few minutes for the cleaner to take effect. Then scrub it thoroughly with water and soap solution. If the dirt on the grout still haven’t come off use hydrogen peroxide. Make sure to dilute these chemicals before applying it to the grout.

Invest in tile sealing to ensure a longer life for ceramic tile and grout.
