How to Fix a Sagging Staircase

Staircases are important functional areas that should be regularly inspected and checked for safety and aesthetical reasons. Stairs can add an appeal to a home, but as time goes by stair ages and in some cases the treads begin to sag. It’s actually an easy task in fixing a sagging staircase most especially when the underside of the stair is accessible.

Let’s start by identifying the parts of the stairs. The carriage holds in place the treads and the risers. Risers are the near-vertical elements in a set of stairs that forms the space between a step and the next, while a thread is the horizontal element that one steps. The part of the stairs where it runs right up through the center of the staircase is the center supporting piece.

After understanding these terms it’s now time to inspect the stairs.

Inspect the carriage. If there are loose risers or treads hold them in place by using a screw or bolt. Make sure that no bolts or screws are protruding on the other side of the staircase. Screws or bolts exposed can cause injury on the people using the stairs.

Center support on stairs is important elements to the safety and durability of the stairs that prevents sagging of stairs on the middle. Check if there are problems on the center support. If this support has been loosened from the treads, put them in place using wood blocks or shims. When there is no existing center support for the stairs, add one. This will ensure that the stairs can be stable even when sagging occurs in the middle. This support underneath it will hold it in place and prevent it from sagging further.

When different wood surfaces are rubbing against each other, a squeaky sound will be produced when the staircase is used. Fix this by adding wood shims placed between the treads and the risers. These shims will prevent the rubbing between the treads and the risers. Powdered graphite can be used when the newly installed or repaired stairs squeaks very bad.

These are some steps that can be taken to have an immediate solution on sagging stairs. Fixing sagging staircases should not be that expensive it just needs a little handiwork and patience to do the trick.
