How to Shingle a Roof

Installing roof shingles is quite easy but it does take a lot of time and hard work. To start off, determine the number of shingles needed to cover the entire roof by measuring its dimensions. Aside from the number of roof shingles, take note of the brand of the shingles, climate and other essential materials and information that might be needed. Take this list to the local hardware store or building supply to purchase the materials.

After purchasing the needed materials, begin finding damaged shingles on the roof. Usually, plywood covered by heavy-duty tar paper is used to move down the damaged shingle.  Seek professional help from a contractor when the damage is severe. When there is damage in the roof, it is likely that severe damage is also apparent on the underlying support of the roof. Observe building codes and safety requirements when installing and repairing roof shingles.

In addition to this, existing shingles that are laid on once is acceptable. When there are two or more layers present, these shingles should be removed. The removal of the said layers can be easily done by using a shingle removal. Also get a dumpster which can come in handy for placing removed shingles.

Now that everything is set, begin working on the largest roof section. Work on this part of the roof, starting at the bottom towards the top. Observe proper distance of each of this overlapping shingles. One common type of shingle that can quickly cover the roof area is the asphalt three-tab shingle.

A roof valley is an area where an angle is formed by two edges of the roof meet. When this area has been reached, a special treatment should be done. Create a water barrier by applying a tough flushing. Then carefully nail down the shingles. Before doing any work on the roof valley, do a little research or better yet consult a contractor for advice.

Always remember to know the weather forecast in scheduling the installation of shingles. There should be a fine weather and no rain when installing single roofing. Try hiring a team of skilled helpers to do the job. Within a day or two the roof can be finished and ready in time before the rain comes.
